Boonies is a colloquial term that originated in the United States military and refers to remote and isolated rural areas. It can also be used to describe a place that is far away from civilization or a place that is difficult to reach. The term was popularized during the Vietnam War to describe the dense jungle and mountainous terrain of Southeast Asia. It has since been used in civilian contexts to refer to any remote and sparsely populated areas, especially those that are difficult to access. The term "boonies" is derived from the Tagalog word "bundok," which means mountain.
